Review on πŸ’Ύ Transcend 256GB JetDrive Lite 330: Expand MacBook Pro Retina Storage by Naomi Snyder

Convenient solution, but note usage and format!

This is a very handy solution to extend your MacBook Pro Retina invisibly and invisibly. I've had the 128GB card for over a year now and I'm very happy with it. I put my photo library and documents on it. It was solid and the power was sufficient for things I can't complain about. However, I have just upgraded to the 256GB version of this card. I noticed a very strange thing when copying data from a 128GB card to a 256GB card. First the data was copied from the 128 GB card to my internal SSD hard drive. According to Get Info, it occupied 29.64 GB on this SSD. According to Get Info, the same data occupies 38.35 GB on a 128 GB card. That's about 30% okay. When I copied data to a 256GB card, the same data occupied 47.91GB according to Get Info. That's a 60% data usage penalty! After experimenting a bit with both cards, I finally formatted them both to HFS+ (aka MacOS Extended Journaled) format and tried copying the data again. This time the data occupied about the same GB. (They were rejected by a few KB.) I don't know why the ExFat format had such a big impact on the card's memory, but it did. Also, after formatting, I noticed that copying data to cards became much, much faster. What used to take 30 minutes to an hour now takes less than 10 minutes. Therefore, I strongly recommend reformatting these cards to HFS+ first.
