Good quality, good looking

This is a really well made shiny beautiful postal envelope. As far as I can tell, it's solid brass; it feels heavy and hard (compared to my old brass plated cap) and the magnet doesn't stick to it. It comes in a nice box with eight screws which I believe are also brass and a matching frame style brass plate (no center valve) for the inside of the door. There were no instructions in the box; I ended up making my own template for screw placement. It was placed in a cut-out mail slot on a thick wooden door in a 1950's house. The only thing is that the recess has to be big enough to lift the valve on the lid because the top of the valve rises to the top of the recess. Like a swinging garage door. I hope that makes sense. I first bought a lid to cover the inside of the mail slot to reduce drafts and insects; However, the lid's flap wouldn't open properly if the lid wasn't installed with a gap at the top. The recess on the door is curved at the corners and prevents the flap from rising. I don't have the tools/skill to cut more wood. Instead, I tried the outside of the door. I removed the old brass plated outer cover and found that this new cover would fit on the outside of the door. Fortunately, the old cover slightly approached the inside. So a win-win situation. The better looking lid is on the outside and the old lid is on the inside. What I really like is that it closes tight and tight with a little pop. Drafts are almost non-existent, although there are two small gaps in the lid's upper left and right corners; and I doubt the cockroach could get through. In this respect it worked better than in front of the door. As I mentioned in the first paragraph it comes with a matching rectangular frame style brass plate which is designed for the inside of the door but it has no flap so the center is wide open. I prefer my door that has lids on both sides. When both sides were completely closed, there were no problems with mail delivery. In my case, the flap of the inner cover is very loose, so mail/magazines slip through easily.

  • Confident
Cons
  • Out of fashion
