Like a few others that I can safely say I had an old soldering iron in my tool box which I pulled out when the time came , and generally use it at your own risk. It got hot, but the tip never got as hot as the pole and I had nowhere to put it. :) And soldering electrical components turned out to be cumbersome and very prone to terrible soldering. So I finally broke down and got a soldering iron kit with Merece 65W electronic soldering station with digital display and let me tell you the difference was night and day. It heats up very quickly, comes with a variety of heads including a very thin tip which I initially used to solder very small electronics, and worked like a charm. This is a station where you can safely place an iron, there is a place to wrap solder around the spool so you can feed it with one hand, there is a cleaning zone (either a metal or a regular wet one Sponge). , and use the digital display to set the desired temperature. The only real flaw I could find is that the cord that comes with the kit needs to be a bit longer to plug into the socket that's a little further away (sitting at the table and plugging the socket next to the table still wasn't possible, so I had to buy a long surge protector to make up the difference and ensure safe placement). Plus, it worked like a charm! I highly recommend this kit especially if you have a workbench or somewhere with an outlet right there and if not then a short extension cord or long surge protector will do. I see the mistake. I love it and would buy it again now knowing what I've been missing all these years.
