Potential reliability issues

I bought a used ep3 and the previous owner installed one of these. My ep3 only has 100,000 miles and I had to replace this secondary pad because it was developing a lot of serious cracks. The cracks allowed exhaust fumes to enter the interior of my car through the air vents and I felt really bad. As this is a fairly low mileage car I suspect the material they were made from was weak resulting in a bad exhaust leak.
