Review (Part 1): This product design for cooling the Global Air 10,000 BTU portable air conditioner should be banned. The air intake draws in air from the room to be cooled (and therefore the rest of your home) and expels hot air through a hose out the window. This creates a negative pressure in the room you are cooling, which draws hot air from outside into your home through gaps in window seams, laundry vents, outlet covers, doors, etc. etc. Inefficient, also when the compressor is turned off the fan keeps running, which in turn freshly chilled air out the window (I'm sure of it - I went outside and held my hand over the hood - cold air blew onto the street). This could easily be fixed in two ways. You could use a second hose connector on the outside as a fence. Depending on the size of the room and how hot it actually is outside, 10,000 BTU should be enough to cool the desired space. At the very least they could have the fan off when the compressor shuts off to prevent all the cold air being sucked out the window. That's 90% of what's wrong with the device. So if this is a deal breaker for you, read no further, just don't buy. Whether you're just cooling a room for a very short period of time (just a couple of weeks), or it's just a garage or similar, read on. Overall Rating (for long-term and effective use): 1/5 stars Part 2: After 1.5 years of use, I replaced this Global Air 10,000 BTU with a Whynter 14,000 BTU unit, which is a "twin hose" (available from Revain ). The rest of this review will compare the two. Noise Level (1/5 Stars): The Global Air 10k BTU unit is approximately 20% louder overall than the Whynter 14k BTU unit when the compressor is running on both. With only the fan running on both, the Global Air unit is 30-40% louder than the Whynter unit. So a smaller device with a lower BTU will be louder for no apparent reason. To top it off, the fan started making a moderately loud squeak less than a year after purchasing the Global Air unit. This was tolerable as the squeaking stopped after a few minutes (until closing time). Even in optimal conditions before the squeaking started, the Global Air 10k BTU portable air conditioner was a little depressingly loud, even though I only used it during waking hours. Raw Power Consumption (2/5 Stars): Overall, the Global Air 10,000 BTU portable air conditioner has a mediocre power consumption compared to the 14,000 BTU Whynter unit. I rate this section so poorly because the fan is incredibly inefficient at its lowest speed The fan consumes the Global Air unit around 170W, compared to the Whynter unit only 50W. With the compressor running, the Global Air unit consumes around 870W, compared to the Whynter unit 1000W. Cooling capacity (3 / 5 stars): Global Portable Air Conditioner The Air 10k BTU has a pretty good cooling performance. I could turn it on on a really hot summer day in Phoenix and it's super fast would cool my office. in terms of raw cooling performance, which was pretty good. Of course, that wasn't very helpful when the compressor had to start again after just a few minutes because it was blowing out all the cold air from the outside. Compared to the Whynter unit, they both cool my office in about the same amount of time. Of course, due to the nature of the intake/exhaust system on the Whynter unit, my office stays cooler for much longer. Selling Price: My estimate depends a lot on what you intend to use it for. If you're using it to cool a room for a short time (less than a month) or using it as an emergency backup, I would give the device 3/5 stars. This is one of the cheapest portable air conditioners on the market and gets the job done in no time. In this case I still can't give more than 3 stars because the money just flies out the window when it's on. If you're looking for something reasonably efficient, this device gets 1/5 stars for the reasoning in the rest of my review. It's just plain absurdly inefficient overall, so any money you save in the short term is completely eclipsed in the medium/long term. Bottom line: if you're looking for something that's reasonably efficient, pay a little more money and get something with double tubing (sometimes called "double pipe"). I have central air conditioning in my house and work from home. I bought a portable air conditioner because I just needed to cool my small home office during the day while my wife is at work, which saves a lot of electricity because I'm cooling a 300-500 square meter office. foot instead of up to 1800 square meters. ft. house in the middle of 105 - 120Β°F summer heat. The Global Air 10k BTU Portable Air Conditioner is the polar opposite of the goal of energy efficiency. PS: A window air conditioner would be even more efficient, taking care of the supply/removal outside the building. I could not continue to use my window air conditioner because of the community of owners. Unless you have an HOA or the space you are cooling is not visible from the street, I would generally recommend a window air conditioner over a portable air conditioner.
