Ideal for carving pumpkins with small children

We really liked these shapes. Three children too young to use carving knives could choose the face of their pumpkin and then take turns carving their design with a rubber mallet. Even my husband (usually a little Halloween curmudgeon) had a good time making his 'happy jack-o'-lantern.' The tools aren't the strongest and we'll probably need a new set next year, but if we're all sitting happily around the kitchen table it's worth the cost. a small piece of wood between the hammer and the blade to spread the impact, which would keep the tools from bending too much. They are really designed for smaller gourds with thinner walls. Our big pumpkins were too fat. Either use smaller gourds or scrape the inside of the face to thin it out before slicing. - Removing a pumpkin piece from the cutter can be difficult. I had to cut pieces with a knife or push with a screwdriver. This is the only reason I marked them for convenience. Otherwise they were easy enough for our two year old to help with his. We combined these tools with UV glow paint and outdoor black light. After the faces were carved, the children went into town to paint their pumpkins. It was the icing on an already quite large cake. Jack o Lanterns look so cool under black lights and they look amazing lit from within with pumpkin lights too.
