My cats started peeing on my carpets and nothing got rid of the smell. Some even left their own smell worse. The unique pet odor and stain remover was the only one that worked. It took away the smell of urine and left a clean, fresh smell. It's been over six months since I've used the treatment as directed on the bottle and the smell hasn't returned. The process requires patience: Dampen the area with the diluted Unique product. Cover with hot, damp towels and let steep. I did that for several days. Then I had to let everything dry otherwise there could be mold under the damp carpet. It took a few laps. I called the company's support team to make sure I was doing it right. They were very helpful and took the time to help me figure out how to be successful. Result: The smell is gone! It was worth it. I've also used it on my son's backpacks or what the cats have. As stated, I applied the liquid to the smelly spot and then soaked the backpack in hot water for a few hours (I usually left it overnight). The next morning I just quickly washed the backpack with detergent and let it air dry. No more smell!
