Review on 🌊 Phade Eco-Friendly Sustainable Marine Biodegradable Compostable Giant Straws - 250 Count, Individually Wrapped, 10.25 inches long by Christina Kharel

Works like a plastic straw but requires marine biodegradation information

I paid about $19 for a box of 250 individually wrapped Phade Products 10.25" straws from Revain. The reason I bought the straws and paid a premium for them was because of the claim that the straws are biodegradable in the marine environment. , the straws look and feel like regular plastic straws and work flawlessly. They don't get wet like paper straws. They are for cold drinks only. These straws are made from a product called Nodax PHA. I don't quite understand the science, but most of the time, more environmentally friendly rapeseed oil is used instead of petroleum. I can only give neutral 3 stars as there is no detailed information on how long it actually takes to dismantle. through a straw, especially in the sea as the product is said to be biodegradable in the marine environment. Update 4/16/2021: Nodax PHA is manufactured by Danimer Scientific. Newspaper The Wall St. Journal wrote an article about the product and also questioned the time it takes to decompose and compost. I did my own quick and dirty test. I put a piece of straw in 2 bottles. One is filled with New York City tap water, the other with lots of sea salt and tap water. I thought sea salt would mimic ocean water. I shook the bottles and let everything settle down. A straw in a bottle filled only with water dropped to the bottom. The straw in the sea salt bottle floated for a few minutes but eventually sank to the bottom. The sea water at the bottom is much colder than the water at the surface. If these straws sink to the bottom of the ocean, how do they even become biodegradable? Also, trying to clean up the sea floor is much more difficult and expensive than trying to clean up the plastic floating on the sea surface. Please, more research and information is needed. Until then I have to downgrade my rating from 3 stars to 1 star.
