Review on Cozy Products CL Radiant Heater by Unm Weil

Revainrating 5 out of 5

It makes an AMAZING chicken coop heater.

For starters. You should not use this as a chicken coop heater. Although that didn't stop me. I use it to heat a cheap $200 4ft x 3ft chicken coop that is drafty and has wood walls about the thickness of a single ply of cardboard. During the day, when the ramp/door is down, the inside of the coop stays about 10-15 degrees warmer than the outside. At night, when there are 2 chickens and 1 duck in the barn, it gets about 20 degrees warmer than outside. While Cozy Products makes a chicken coop heater, it was lower wattage and was not intended for wall mounting, but rather for outdoor installation for a larger (better insulated) chicken coop. I'm very glad I made the choice considering how drafty and cold it is in her barn and also given the lack of space. Although it came with velcro for attachment I haven't seen it work well for my purposes and definitely don't want it falling off and possibly scalding my birds at night. I didn't want it under the hay either because despite the metal finish, this plus her water plate just screamed "electrical hazard". Anyway I attached it with 2 bolts and washers at the top and 2 more at the bottom and held it securely to one of the stall walls. At this point the chicken coop has to fall before this thing falls. I connected it to a thermal cube so it turns on at 35 degrees and turns off at 45 degrees. I just leave it on and am ready to go year-round with a stall temp alarm if it ever fails. So far it has weathered a very turbulent Illinois fall and a very cold winter with ease. Also in the morning there are no dishes with frozen water, although the dish warmer has been removed. The thing can even keep up in a run-down little chicken coop.

Pros
  • Pleasant to use
Cons
  • Can hurt
