Revainrating 3 out of 5

Design flaws limit paper type and lifespan

I bought this shredder to add 'brown' material to my compost. It does an excellent job of shredding 20+ pound paper, heavy junk mail, and paper grocery bags into small pieces that break down quickly in my compost. Unfortunately, it received a 3-star rating due to a design flaw. With almost daily use, the 1st shredder lasted 24 days before dying. I was able to exchange it for a replacement device. After 36 days, the second chopper lags long enough that it cannot be replaced. The problem is related to the shape of the casing around the sanding sheets. The area they occupy is square. Material accumulates at the edges and over time packs up in this area, creating an inaccessible paper jam. This happens very quickly when using lightweight materials such as newspapers and paper lunch bags. The first sign of build-up is an occasional "pop", both audible and visual, from the space between the slot and the controls. This eventually leads to an internal short or open circuit, turning the shredder into a large paperweight. Would I buy it again? no This is not suitable for my use. Will I buy it to shred standard email and old files from time to time? May be. I would be concerned about its durability but it would get the job done in the short term.
