I've been riding my road bike with clips for many years and only recently decided to get a pair for MTB. Needless to say I had more than a few drops at low speed due to technical issues, but that's part of the learning curve. And the feeling of being able to pick up the bike for small jumps, overcoming rocks that suddenly appear, etc., is always worth it. Before you jump into ear clips, make sure you have some experience, a good pair of flats and shoes. (e.g. the FiveTens I currently have both with and without clips) will take you far, but day and night they clip to flats. Flats have their place, but clamps are much better in many ways.
