Review on πŸ”Œ High-Performance Ubiquiti Networks Edgerouter Lite 3-Port Router for Advanced Connectivity by Jeff Drollinger

Revainrating 1 out of 5

Ideal reliable router for my home network

I recently upgraded my internet service to Fios gigabit speeds and found that my existing router/switch has gigabit ethernet ports but can't really handle gigabit internet traffic. My situation is a little unique. I have a house with a wired ethernet network and the internet service goes down to the basement where I have a structured media center to manage all the wired connections. My router connects directly to the Verizon ONT in the basement. I have a WiFi hotspot downstairs to provide WiFi coverage around the house (it's actually a WiFi router used as a hotspot). I needed a simple, reliable gigabit router that is fast and reliable. This EdgeRouter definitely meets these requirements. This device has a lot more features than I'll ever use, but that's fine because it suits my needs. I was a bit concerned about other reviews that spoke about the difficulty of setting up this device. I'm not a networking expert - just an advanced home user. The good news is that I found the installation to be very easy. Setting up a basic network is easy. The default settings out of the box will get you started. As others have pointed out, for full gigabit support, the best way is to enable offloading to hardware. There are instructions for this in many places. This must be done through the command line interface. This was the only slightly "advanced" part of my setup process. One VERY important thing that others have pointed out is ONLY the router. There are no switched ports on the device. This means you need to connect the output of port 1 or 2 directly to a gigabit switch, which can then power your other devices or WiFi network. With offloading enabled and powered by the gigabit switch, I was able to get the exact same gigabit speeds I measured directly from the Fios ONT. This router is FAST, and if it's as reliable as other reviews indicate, I expect to be very satisfied in the future. Definitely a 5 star experience so far.
