Revainrating 5 out of 5

What is that smell? Degrades over time.

Update: I threw it away after about 8 months. The microfiber has degraded/dried out to the point where it shrinks and doesn't stretch as easily as it did when new. I've always used it with a waterproof pillow protector which probably keeps it out of the environment. Given the rancid smell of the new product that took many hours to wash and dry, I'm not sure if it's really microfiber. Initial Rating: Very qualified three stars (later upgraded to 1 star). This is the second product I've recently purchased from Revain with a strong chemical smell. When I took the pillow out of the packaging, the first thing I noticed was the smell. An almost rancid and totally bewildering chemical smell. If you've lived long enough, all smells are either recognizable or evoke associations with other smells. This is the first fragrance I don't recognize or compare to anything else. Absolutely unique and bad. I removed the outer cover and tried a long cycle with detergent and bleach. When it was all done the smell was reduced to about 10% of what it was but was still there. It took about three hours to dry on medium-low heat. Or so I thought. I opened it up to check but the core was still damp. If you wash this you need to make sure it is completely dry from the core. Failure to do this will most likely result in mold. Unlike polyfill and even down pillows, this pillow takes a *long* time to fully dry. Not wanting to risk damaging the microfiber, I kept the temperature on medium. Considering the smell was still there, I removed all of the microfiber from the pillow and poured the extra that was provided in a separate bag into an extra one. large nylon laundry bag and washed again with a long cycle. Because the microfiber was packed much more loosely in the laundry bag and was more exposed to the wash water, the smell was gone. It took at least another two hours to fully dry in a laundry bag on a moderately low temperature. After the fragrance took care of the scent, it took about a week of trial and error to get the filler to my liking. Now that it is, I like the pillow. I've stuffed it to the point where my head is supported more or less at shoulder level, which will likely help with the occasional neck pain that can occur when your head isn't properly supported. Decent pillow but wash and dry thoroughly before use.

Pros
  • Decent performance
Cons
  • Slightly wrinkled
