Recommended TDS tool. That's why.

I grow chili peppers hydroponically. I need to check the TDS to make sure the nutrient levels in the water are correct. This instrument measures TDS, EC and temperature (both C and F). As far as I can tell, this seems accurate. I tested our tap water and the screen turned red and showed a PPM over 600 (?!?). I then tested our filtered water from the fridge with a cheap filter and it was still red and over 600ppm. Then he checked the bottled water from the dispenser and it was about 300. Finally I checked some distilled water and it showed 0. The controls are simple: on/off/hold (which only sets PPM/EC and not the temperature), clear and mode (to toggle between PPM, EC, Temo C and Temp F). The indicator looks pretty stable. I don't have any other good way to test accuracy other than filtered water, but for my purposes it's definitely trustworthy. The instructions state that the TDS calculation compensates for temperature, which I believe is because it reads temperature. I wish there was a way to get the raw EC value as the conversion factor is highly dependent on the type of solids suspended in the water. .From what I've read you need to be careful not to submerge too much of the fixture to avoid water getting onto the internal electronics. I haven't tested this, but keep the water between the minimum and maximum levels and be careful not to fall into the water.

Pros
  • Instruments for substance analysis
Cons
  • There are even more interesting possibilities.
