Coarse grit may last longer, but 1000 grit becomes a knife that hits bare metal too quickly. I believe that a thin layer of "glue" holding a thin layer of fine-grained industrial diamond will one day prove to be the acid test. But since a fine-grained stone is necessary to achieve the desired, sharpest final edge, without it, the remaining stones are "so what?" processed.
