Review on ๐Ÿ“ป Tram 1411 Broadband Discone/Scanner Base Antenna by David Skyline

Must read info

I bought this for CB (11 meters) but didn't want to attach an 18ft 1/2 bar. Also wanted a scanner and hoped it would work well for both of them. You may think that you don't need much information about the instructions, but I had a lot of unanswered things that I went through and I hope this review helps those who have similar questions, so here it is. The packaging was minimal but it had everything and nothing. was damaged. Several people have noticed and a question has been asked about the movement between the base cone and the base plane. Mine has moved too. Eventually you will just try to fix it and not return it because you think that many of you understand. You can tighten it by hand, I had to tighten about 3/4 turn, and the part holding the vertical about 1/2 turn. The antenna is still good! The pictures are a bit ambiguous, but I placed two long mechanics on a cone opposite each other. From what I've seen, others don't. They're longer than the other radials, so expecting reflective support from shorter radials just isn't right. But I'm a beginner so all I know is that it works fine as it does for me. The antenna floods in heavy rain, my SWR was over 3. I could actually watch it dry out with an ohmmeter. I haven't solved this issue yet (trying) but thought some people might want to know. The antenna comes with a piece of paper listing the distances for two adjustable radial tips. I set it up for CB which was recommended at 135mm but doesn't show where to measure. The knob (slightly knurled so you can loosen and tighten it with your fingers) is shaped like a ball or pencil point. Measure the distance from the tip of the regulator to the outside of the ball on the moving stem. I was originally centered on channel 20 at 131mm but after "aging the antenna" after a few weeks it was 135mm for CB channel 20 (27.205MHz). Also note that the vertical radius can be adjusted at the base, but it won't really help you. I moved it a full inch and my SWR changed to 0.2. My installed antenna has a 126 foot cable from the transmitter and this is very important as I learned this the hard way and by accident. This story would be too long, but the number is 18 feet for 11 meters and 17.5 feet for 10 meters (forget all propagation factors, it will work). You don't have to worry about shorter wavelengths, just what you're going to use for your long frequency. Set the cord length to 18 feet (18, 36, 54, 72, 90, 108, 126, etc.) and try to get to a foot of that number (mine is 35 feet - spark gap - 90 feet - switch - 1 jumpers = 126 feet). I was at 135ft for a while and the best SWR I could get at resonance was 1.7. I currently have 1.03:1 so this will do. I attach photos of the analysis of my antenna at different frequencies (two 11m since the antenna is outdated) for you who are interested in the rest (not all work well). Sorry, I didn't try 10 meters. SWR is the blue curve, 2:1 is the first grid line, you can see the frequency range in the lower left and right corners. In general, for the money I think it's ok, it's a wide range so you have to sacrifice something and you don't get everything. I hope I fixed the rain problem! and the best SWR I could get at resonance was 1.7. I currently have 1.03:1 so this will do.
