Sony diversifies its Alpha 7 range based on the specific needs of amateur photographers - 7s (sensitivity) for video, 7r (resolution) for photos and just plain "entry". level" a7 for a decent combination of the two. Here we see their next branch - 7c (compact) for travel. If you had to compare it to the a7iii - which is inevitable because it uses much of the same technology - it isn't only smaller, it weighs less too There are some tradeoffs and improvements over a7iii: Tradeoff: - Stabilization isn't the best - No physical controls - No joystick, no front dial under power button, fewer user buttons - Electronic viewfinder (EVF ) not the best for photographers - Can't turn off the electronic front shutter Maximum shutter speed is 1/4000 compared to a 7iii 1/8000 Only 1 memory card slot Improvements - Improved shutter - Improved port covers - Better battery usage - More Photos/Videos per charge - More custom save modes (3), improved position on the mode dial - You can custom tzer-defined functions Assign 3 buttons and u/d/l/r toggle the scroll wheel, 7 total- Improved AF in stills and videos- Continuous eye-tracking AF in videos- Works with Catalyst Browse to create gimbal-like footage in post-processing - Dedicated video record button- No video record limit I think The frustration you see from some people reviewing this camera is in some ways partly justified (lack of second card slot, poor electronic viewfinder, fewer physical controls) but I think so too that many of you expected it to be the next iteration of the a7 series. (a7iv). It is not. And it doesn't have to be - it's a new lineup with a new label that has an integrated Micro Four Thirds/APS-C target market. Sony has taken existing technology, improved it in many ways and packed it into a smaller, lighter body. In my opinion the a7c is perfect for travelling, hiking and vlogging. With lens choices it can be lighter than my MFT system and has all the benefits of a full frame sensor. It's small/light enough that I don't mind taking it with me anywhere. If I wanted a high end camera with more features I could invest in an a7r, a7s, a9 or FX6 and use the same lenses. If you already have an a7iii, you probably won't see much benefit in switching to this camera. Waiting for a7iv. But if you're from the APS-C or MFT space, you're a traveler, traveler or vlogger looking to maximize image quality to weight/space ratio, you're the target audience for this camera. I highly recommend it!
