Review on πŸ”Œ TP-Link Omada Hardware Controller: SDN Integrated, PoE Powered - Easy Network Management for Up to 100 Devices with Cloud Access & Omada App (OC200) by Victor Rodriguez

Essential gear if you have > 1 TP-Link AP but a bit complex

I bought this to manage my 2 TP-Link EAP245 APs and I'm glad I did have. The wifi coverage in my house is much better now. My quick tip is to update the firmware on everything right away and you're good to go. My biggest gripe is that they walk you through this whole wizard and setup process before you actually get into it, and then it's easy to forget the most important thing: always update the firmware first. The old and the new firmware are completely different. So if you're just thinking about skipping (or hurrying up) the setup wizard and then updating the firmware, you'll save me a headache. If you already have TP-Link access points, you are probably managing them independently and need to cancel this. The easiest is a 30-30-30 reset, or you can just update the firmware on the WAP if you're not sure you have the latest version, which will ensure you have the latest version and reset everything as well becomes. If they are already managed independently, they are not available for central management. The UI is pretty good, but you'll have to dig around to figure out how to set up the SSID in the first place, which is the whole point. And it hides some things like fast roaming under "advanced" features, while fast roaming is one of the highlights of getting this thing for your home network, in my opinion (if you have a commercial setup with a lot of WAP, it might be one centralized management is the main benefit for you). In general, I'm happy with the result, but it took more time than necessary. When all is said and done, I wish I had just started with Ubiquiti. But I haven't and it seems to work fine.

Pros
  • Fast switching
Cons
  • Infinitely slow
