I've seen a lot of videos about safety shorts. I was turning 39 and needed extra protection so I ordered a pair of POC vpd bottom shorts. I ordered a size that fit my specs and they were huge. In my opinion, the biggest drawback was the massive panels on the sides. It felt and looked like someone taped an ironing board to MG's thigh. You'll laugh when you have them. After a day of riding I was glad to have her but not in love. Also, it was 30 degrees Fahrenheit and they were drenched in sweat. I had thin base layer pants, POC shorts and MTB. I quickly went to try another pair and then I found these. I'm 6ft 2in and 180lbs ordered medium. I fell in love with it instantly, at $40 cheaper than POC and the filling was epic! Multiple pads to give you full range of motion in your legs. In addition, unlike ironing board shorts, they help to evaporate sweat. Not only do they have what appears to be plastic on the outside of the lining. It seems to me to be much more protective than regular vpd foam. I'm hooked, I love and will wear them on every trip here and now. Oooh, and a little tailbone protector that helps a lot. Another note: the chunky belt helps keep them in place. There is a sticky silicone strip on the lower leg to prevent the thigh from being lifted. POCs that are said to work great with POC knee pads didn't work and mine slipped off. The one thing most people are sure to ask is the chamois. That's a very thin layer. I think it's not exactly a pad, very very soft and thin foam. It might help a little, but it won't save you like memory foam. The good thing is that this widens the front a bit. Protect priceless parts a little, but having something inside boosts confidence. buy you.
