I'm not a bike mechanic, but maybe a bit more than an ordinary bike enthusiast. However, I do enjoy making my own work, especially when it's fairly straight forward. I was reluctant to get a specific tool for the job. I have hundreds of tools available and wire cutters are included in my box. First I tried to cut the brake cables with it and damn it was sloppy. I don't want to say "impossible" because I'm sure I could break through somehow, but it would end up being a mess of threads. I'm sure I could get by with a dremel, but how about cutting the rubber tubing? It might not have been too melted or irregularly shaped, but why would it go bad? Also, I have enough experience to know that the right tool can make life a lot easier. And it was easy! The tool cuts cable with little to no effort. When it came time to crimp the end cap, this tool again did all that needed to be done. Could I have used a cheaper tool? Maybe. But reading reviews of these tools, they seem to be a single entity. I would like to have a tool available for future use. I may not have to work hard on my bike, but if I can save my friends a few bucks by customizing cables for them, so much the better.
