I use these pencils extensively for drawing portraits as well as biological illustrations. This particular set contains both very soft wires up to 9V and fairly hard wires. For shading and darker values with good blending, this is what you need. The harder pens in the set hold the tip well and convey details in precise drawings. Of course, if you draw a lot, you know what kind of pens you need and need for your projects. However, if you are undecided or inexperienced with this brand, rest assured that Derwent is a great pen. Easy-to-sharpen and smooth rods are distinctive features. The box the pens are in is also good. I bought this set to replace a very well used and loved set that had a lot of used pencils down to the small hard to hold cores - so of course I wanted the same set. I highly recommend this brand and this selection of pens.
