Good product, didn't work for me

We have two dogs who ride in the back of my wife's SUV in one of those "hammocks" that stretch across the back seat and attach to the headrests. They love it as it allows them to go back and forth from window to window without the risk of falling off the seat onto the floor. However, I know it's terribly unsafe, which is why we have these seat belt buckles. The product itself is fine and works as it should, but our dogs can't figure it out. We wanted something long enough for them to stick their head out of the window and still be buckled up. Unfortunately, that length is just enough to get tangled in each other's ropes and in and between their legs. This caused us to stop many times to untangle the dogs and tighten the length. Once it got so long that they couldn't tangle, it got so short that the larger dog was so restricted he couldn't stand up or even sit down without pulling the harness so low he couldn't could do seat. general. I'm afraid that's just not possible for our dogs. One thing to note as well: when we got into the backseat at one of our roadside sweater harness adjustments, one of the dogs was open and just ran off. We latched it, only ever adjusting the length, so I have to think it sort of opened itself - maybe she stepped on the seatbelt buckle?
