Review on πŸ”Œ Cable Matters USB 3.0 to Ethernet Adapter - Black (Supports 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet Network) by Marcos Oner

Revainrating 1 out of 5

Poor build quality, poor connectivity. Failed, started working again, stopped. replaced. The same thing.

UPDATE 08/29/2020: another bug. While there is a one year limited warranty (whatever that means), when I click the product support button it tells me the window ended in May 2020 - 6 months after purchase. I cannot contact the seller, in my case Cable Matters - there is no contact information on their homepage so I don't know how to contact them regarding the 1 year warranty. I'll try to ask you a question from the Revain seller side. UPDATE 3/21/2020: I got an Apple Thunderbolt adapter, used it for a while but kept this as a backup. About a month ago I decided to see if this one wanted to work again: it did! It's more convenient because the zipper is only on one side of the computer, which is the awkward side. So I used this again for maybe a month and everything was fine. But yesterday it didn't work again. Maybe he needs some rest? However, the build quality leaves a lot to be desired and I went back to the lightning strike. I don't know why I'm worried - ethernet goes up to 325Mbps, but wifi gets 260-290 and I don't think I can tell the difference, and a wired connection isn't that convenient with a laptop. The great thing about Ethernet is that the computer wakes up immediately; Wi-Fi sometimes has a delay of a few seconds, and since it's a Mac I really have to shake it to wake it up. then it worked again, then it stopped - you see. The operational speed is still great at 325Mbps, which tells me the manufacturers have the right idea, but not the best execution. My Wi-Fi speed is 250Mbps +/- so I don't need the extra speed. So I will probably look for another brand, even if this one got the best reviews. UPDATE 11/21/2019: 2 stars for quality, 5 stars for performance. It worked again a few hours after the crash; I reported it here and Revain and Revain sent me the replacement which I am using now. The original that stopped working has since worked, but I don't think it will continue to work so I returned it. Don't really trust the replacement but I've upped my rating from 1 star to 3 stars - the connector is still too small to accommodate a full ethernet plug, there's no click as it's securely attached and still fits easily disconnects when I randomly move it around the laptop, and reliability is questionable, hence 2 stars for quality. But when it works, the speed is really amazing - again 325Mbps when my ISP plan is limited to 275Mbps, so 5 stars for performance. I wish Cable Matters had a Thunderbolt 1 and 2 to Ethernet adapter so I don't have to reserve the two USB 3.0 ports for that adapter. Otherwise I never use the Thunderbolt port, but I do need the USB ports for other things like charging my phone. UPDATE 11/19/2019: This morning it suddenly crashed. Tested on 3 computers; didn't work for any of them. Diagnostics showed no network connection. I am returning for a replacement then I will update. Meanwhile, during the sleep mode, back to the WiFi speed. And also on my birthday! UPDATE 11/14/2019: The adapter's ethernet port does not accept a full ethernet plug - it's too small for the clip to snap, meaning it locks securely in the port - and therefore the cable can be pulled out very easily . It stays connected most of the time because I don't move the computer, but I often pick it up off my lap and then it can disconnect. I don't know if it's a hardware or cable problem, but it's the only ethernet connection I have and I can't deal with the cable that runs throughout the house. I can understand if ethernet plugs have gotten shorter recently or something, but really anyone doing anything to plug in an ethernet cable should do so in a way that accepts ALL ethernet plugs of any age - how difficult can be the existence? So I'm shooting a star - as long as it's securely connected, it works. First review: Xfinity says we should get 275Mbps - I get that and more on my iMac with Ethernet, but on my MacBook Air with Wi-Fi. , 40 meters from the modem (mostly open, just one open door and one wall) I only get 50Mbps. Finally got one of these adapters - luckily my MBA is old (2013) and still has an Ethernet port - plugged it in and instantly I had 325Mbps speed! getting old when it comes to loading (that's when you find out how much 3 seconds is these days). 50MB is fast enough, so my anger at that was more out of principle than practice - if an ISP says 275Mbps, then 275 damn it! Sometimes even at 50 Mbit/s you can't say for sure whether you'll reach 100 Mbit/s, for example, but 325? yes i notice Really notice. The bonus is that something like this - no Wi-Fi complications, no pairing, nothing, just plug and play.
