Heidi by Johanna Spyri

Heidi by Johanna Spyri is a classic for children. It looks dated, but most readers (kids and adults) will be rewarded once they dive into the story. Heidi is a little girl, orphaned and raised by her older sister. When her sister gets a chance to get a job, she literally leaves Heidi with her grandfather (a bitter old man known as Onkel Alm because he lives high up in the Swiss Alps). Heidi wins Grandpa's heart and happily spends two years free-roaming in the Alps. The sister then reappears and demands that Heidi come with her and be the "companion" of Clara, another disabled young girl who lives in town. Values collide: the love of life and freedom that Heidi experienced in the Alps and the values of the big city. Will Heidi win and return to Uncle Alma? All of Joanna Spiri's books are about the author's beloved Swiss Alps and populated by wonderful children, but Heidi is her best and most read book. Heartily recommended! Almost better than the Swiss summer holidays in the Alps and much easier to get!
