I got another and it works fine, but I like this one better. It has adjustable volume and adjustable tone and that is nice to have. I don't need ear piercing and even on low volume it is plenty enough to ring out into the yard to tell the dogs to come back in. If they were to get out and I didn't know where they were I'd put it on high volume to penetrate further to tell them to get their fannies back home to get a goodie. It WORKS. I also really like that it takes several AAA batteries, no fussy round or unusual batteries. I have plenty of rechargeable AAA's around so if it runs out, it is no big deal to replace them.
