When TIG welding thin steel sheets, buying small diameter wire is expensive. I TIG welded 20 gauge mild steel and bought it for a fraction of the cost of buying straight wire. It worked very well. As long as you break up the slag on the steel with a quick twist of the wire brush, you can easily tack and weld with this wire. You just have to hurry so as not to air the holes. TIP: To make micronails, you need twice the amperage than welding tacks (just over 50 amps for 20 gauge). If you can get very close (1/16 inch) with a very sharp electrode, pedal and count to two and you have nice little knobs with no distortion and good penetration. Place the wire in the butt joint or cut small pieces to be placed in the butt joint. Hit the tip of the wire directly and you'll get a really good micro tack.
