Blast from the past!

This is a review of a vintage Royal red typewriter. I haven't used a typewriter in a long time, but in my long history I've used it a lot and learned how to type on it. what would today be considered an old-fashioned typewriter. So I'm glad I have the opportunity to step back in time, take my mind off computers and the internet distractions that come with them, and see what this device has to offer. The typewriter arrived in good condition with no damage. It was very well packaged in molded styrofoam to keep the moving parts in place, all in a corrugated carrying case with a sturdy plastic handle. The machine was accompanied by an instruction manual and although it was only 4 pages long it had everything you need to get started and learn to use this typewriter. There was a great graphic diagram on page 1 showing all the parts and that illustration was extremely helpful. The typewriter is heavy, mostly metal, and features include a paper guide, margin stops, leading selector, pressure adjuster, margin correction button, ribbon color selector, and an optional auto space button. I have to admit that this typewriter takes a bit of getting used to after typing on a computer keyboard for the last 30 years haha. I thought I would automatically remember everything, but I consulted the guide many times and was glad it was included. Aesthetically, the machine is beautiful. The color is bright as shown in the Revain product description, however the color feels a bit grainy on the right side of the device and slightly on the front. However, this is not a visible defect and does not detract from the beauty of this item and in no way affects its functionality. The roller works well, the paper runs straight on the guide and the carriage return (lever) works well. As you approach the end of the queue, the device will beep to let you know you're at the end of the queue. First I had a little problem with the carriage return lever. It was so loose that the lever kept falling on the ribbon spool cover when typing and I had to pick it up every time I used it. Normally the carriage would return when in the up position, but it should stay in the up position while you type. The typewriter did not come with small tools or adjustment wrenches, but my husband was able to successfully tighten the loose reset lever for me using a small wrench to tighten the nut. Alignment with each other, not knowing if it was me or the typewriter, I checked the letter alignment by typing the letter "n" between each uppercase and lowercase key. This little test showed that the letters lay flat on the paper, so it was me, not the typewriter, hitting the keys unevenly. I kinda had a suspicion that this might happen since they don't look like computer keyboards at all and it all takes practice. I set the Imprint slider to "L" and found that this setting works better for me as far as the font looks, it makes the prints smoother. This test also showed me that each key works well. None of the keys stuck when typed, all pressed well and hit the tape and roller properly. The edge guides work great. The ribbons came well colored - both red and black sections. The tab set works very simply, just move the install button in the positive direction where you want to install it and you will feel a slight click. All functions of this machine work properly. The paper pad works fine, the backspace key works fine, there's also an auto space if you want to move the line forward more than one space but without using the tab set. The field override button/function works well too. I couldn't find any non-working features on this unit so I'm happy with the camper. My final thoughts on this typewriter? I really love it! It looks great, works great and there are so many things I can use it for. It takes some getting used to if you haven't used it for years or if you're using it for the first time. You have to press the keys really pretty hard, like old vintage typewriters do, and pressing those keys produces that great old metal sound. But that's part of what makes it so enjoyable.

Pros
  • Rugged, retro-style metal body for durability
Cons
  • Not sure
