Always choose a metal insert. Saves time (and cleanup) when searing meat or cooking on the stove before putting it in the slow cooker. This model is perfect for that! What I don't like about this particular model is that the handles on the sides of the pot are made of the same metal and not plastic or silicone. My latest Farberware slow cooker had large handles that I could easily lift with my bare hands to remove the pot. But honestly, the price for this Hamilton Beach hotel couldn't be better. So I use oven mitts and it's not that bad. I just hope I never burn myself in the process. All in all I would recommend this. The height is too high which is fine if you are in a hurry. So I overheat and then switch to heat for the entire cooking process. Even at low revs, it's hotter than I expected. But I still love this slow cooker!
