Review on Dorman 590-447 Park Assist Camera: Enhance Safety for Honda Civic Models by Todd Calloway

Slightly better than the stock 2015 Civic rear camera, with imperfections

Edit: Looking at my photos as I write or edit this review, the stock camera is on the left, Dorman on the right. However, when I look at my finished review, the photos are upside down. Dorman looks like you're looking through an eye-shaped hole. If you have a basic backup camera on a 2015 Civic, you already know that you can't really see anything. The screen is too small, the camera too dark, it feels like looking through a roll of kitchen paper. Left is a stock camera photo, right is a Dorman replacement. I've done my best to make an honest comparison, I didn't move the car between the two photos. Disclaimer, I forgot to clean the stock camera before taking the picture, when I posted I had already replaced it. Not sure if it changed anything. First about Dorman. It seems to you that you are looking through a hole in the form of an eye. You can see a lot of distorted trunk lid at the top and a distorted car bumper at the bottom. Much more than a standard camera. This probably couldn't be avoided by adding a fisheye lens. My first reaction was that I wasn't sure if I liked this replacement any better. The yellow guides aren't exactly in the same place, so get used to them carefully. However, the yellow dotted line I used to direct the car to where I want to stop at the end of the parking space is in the exact same spot when I park. That's great. Now for the good. Installation was easy, it plugged straight into a standard jack and worked with no issues. The camera is definitely a bit brighter. Here's the best part. When I actually used it in a parking lot and exited a busy parking lot, the left and right views were better. I think this might be the most important part of a rear camera. While this camera can't solve the screen-too-small problem on a base 2015 Civic, for practical use in a parking lot it's important that it's slightly brighter and has a wider horizontal viewing angle.
