Okay $20 for a scrubber is a bit pricey but every review I've read says it's a MUST for cast iron and I'm here for rooftops to scream that I agree. I recently switched from toxic teflon to cast iron and I LOVE the taste of my food, but I have to admit I was careful when cleaning the cast iron (no soap, no dishwasher). I worry about keeping pots really clean so my 5 year old doesn't get sick and having a germ sponge on something that can't be washed in the dishwasher sounded like a bad idea. This scrubber came a week after I switched to cast iron skillets and made things MUCH easier. I use the Lodge Double Play grill/pan as a baking sheet. I've baked in cheese, sticky sugar - you name it - and this chain scrubber got the job done in a few easy passes. Tonight I cooked a roux (read: flour-based glue) in my 10-inch lodge pan, then let it dry on the stovetop until I got to it two hours later (see: 5-year-old). This scrubber brushed it under hot water as if it were oil. Chain mail cleaning time per pot: less than 1 minute. Mail cleaning time for the worst pan mess I've managed: about 1 full minute. The bonus is that my son and husband think it's cool and clean the cast iron for me. Did you read that? THIS RINGED STRIP STARTS SOMETHING IN THE MALE GENOME AND MAKES YOU WASH THE DISHWASHERS! That alone costs $20, right?! Rest assured it cleans very, very well. Now let me tell you why else I love it and why I bought it for my mom to prepare for the end of the world. This thing is INDESTRUCTIBLE and will last for many years before needing to be replaced. (She hasn't thought about hoarding plastic dish scrapers, and now she doesn't have to. This thing easily lasts longer than a dozen packs of sponges.) Another bonus I thought of today while slicing the onions got is stainless steel and hard bench. Do the same as you would with stainless steel soap bars: remove strong odors by rubbing them on your hands. (Just make sure you keep your chain mail clean or it will smell like onions and bacon grease!) Another reviewer suggested leaving it in the sink while you wash other dishes, which is a good suggestion. And soap doesn't hurt. Just rinse it well before it touches your cast iron again. Need more reasons to buy it? * It is eco-friendly and a great gift for your environmental friends/neighbors/relatives. * You can easily pack it for camping. It cleans just as well in brownish-green seawater!* It will NOT melt in the dishwasher.* It'll bring an extra touch of medieval chic to your kitchen.* If you hate it (honestly, sis?), vote it up. it is a more demeaning use, like a coaster. Some man will eventually find him and start washing the dishes!
