Downgraded from 3 stars.

These are fantastic little microcontrollers once you get over the kinks. What's good: The NodeMCU board is well documented and there are plenty of tutorials online, no matter what your project is. It's really picky about which USB cables you use. Of the 15 or so cables I have, only one works. Guys at HighLetgo: If you're reading this, what cables do you recommend? The pinout is numbered on the bottom of the board. A mess if you use a breadboard. I have to keep counting the solder bumps to understand where to route the wires in the BB. Finally I marked the ground and vin pins on the side of the board as well as the solder points using red and black markers for reference points. All this to say that I was able to create an 8 channel LED strip controller with NodeMCU in web server mode and use an android application to manage the settings. UPDATE: Of the four, I'm having trouble connecting via USB. The one I struggle with all day requires a magic dance of holding down the reset button, closing and reopening the Arduino IDE, and reconnecting the USB cable. And it's a different combination every time I want to upload. In theory this is a great idea, but you will spend a lot of time just trying to get the basic code loading functionality to work.

Pros
  • Useful for more than its intended purpose
Cons
  • Crumpled
