Review on 🐠 Tunze 9410.000 Aquarium Doc Skimmers, Ideal for Tanks up to 265-Gallons by Kelsey Hoss

Efficient but not silent

I have been using a Tunze 9410 skimmer for over 12 months. While it has been more reliable than any other skimmer I have had and the support from Roger at Tunze USA is outstanding, this skimmer has the following disadvantages: 1) Water leaving the skimmer through the riser gurgles/splashes and is not very quietly. . The filter sock helps a little, but it's still audible at 12 feet. If you're looking for a quiet skimmer for your bedroom, look elsewhere. 2) The airline can be covered with salt deposits. Sometimes it's better to suck a cup of RODI water into the air intake to clean the salt crystals. 3) The opening of the skimmer bowl is made of acrylic and the cup is made of thin polycarbonate. This hybrid design is a bit odd and the cup feels a bit flimsy. It holds up well, but for $400 the construction is underwhelming. 4) The skimmer cover can sometimes get stuck and difficult to rotate/remove. Solves itself with a little attention, but can be annoying. The lid rattled a little for the first six months, but then it stopped. 5) The skimmer has a small body/reaction chamber and is not very good at preventing air bubbles from escaping. A filter attachment helps prevent bubbles from escaping, but increases the footprint of the skimmer significantly. I think a slightly larger reaction chamber would be more efficient. 6) Small note: The skimmer outlet is next to the pump inlet and cannot be turned in the opposite direction. Tunze had to allow the skimmer body to be detached from the base so the inlet and outlet could be reconfigured to suit any sump configuration.
