Balanced. The carving and chef's knives are balanced about a finger's width behind the blade. This offers superior control and feel as you slice through it all. Overall this is the best knife set I have ever owned and I have tried several. They have a beautiful design, fit perfectly in the hand and easily handle any vegetable / protein / other product. If you don't intend to put together a set of individual pieces, you won't find a better set of knives than this one. The only minor criticism I can make is that straight out of the box they are not as sharp as they could be. Take a few minutes and sharpen your blades. Soon they will be able to shave the hair off your arm (tested and verified).
