The best pulp sheets we've tried are strong enough, don't fold in half for most foods, and absorb moisture well. 9 inches was a dinner plate in the 60s - today it is 12 inches. 9-inch plates come in handy when you're trying to control portions and eat less, but are still big enough to hold a sandwich and small salad.
