I should have read more reviews before buying, otherwise I wouldn't have done it. This is a decorative item not intended for use. Both parts are painted black and the metal underneath feels too soft to withstand any pressure. Pestle turns anything that is lightly ground into gray dust, no matter what color the herb/spice/salt was before. Real mortar pestles can be made from ceramic, marble, REAL cast iron instead of painted metal, wood or granite without these problems, they are not a cheap disappointment that becomes unusable after a single use.
