This item does not match its description. It's just black painted metal that wasn't even securely packaged. My husband ordered this for me as a gift so I didn't read the reviews until I unboxed it and winced, but after reading them I didn't even try to use it. I intend to grind herbs not only for spellwork but also for cooking and I wouldn't even dare risk color chips in my herbs. Unfortunately I have to say that I have NEVER returned anything immediately within minutes of receiving it.

I should have read more reviews before buying, otherwise I wouldn't have done it. This is a decorative item not intended for use. Both parts are painted black and the metal underneath feels too soft to withstand any pressure. Pestle turns anything that is lightly ground into gray dust, no matter what color the herb/spice/salt was before. Real mortar pestles can be made from ceramic, marble, REAL cast iron instead of painted metal, wood or granite without these problems, they are not a cheap…

Soooo I'm not the type to write reviews often. I was expecting a small multi-purpose kettle. I wouldn't even be able to grind anything in it! First, it's super SMALL!
