It can be switched on and off on both sides.

I had an old one that had to be on all the time to provide power. It is connected to my overhead light in the garage so the light was always on to keep the power going. It's a dual power switch so I can plug in my drill chargers on one side and the overhead light on the other. Now I can charge the batteries with one side on and the other off so the lights don't stay on all night. Great product, fits well on the desk.
