Review on Wood Trick DIY Mechanical Forklift Building Set by Michael Ramu

For intermediate crafters with workshop tools

We have previously assembled a Wood Trick locomotive and large truck. They were relatively easy to put together compared to a forklift puzzle. The problem seems to be that the part tolerances are less accurate than previous products. The details of this set are more difficult to carve out of wooden panels. Looks like more sanding and waxing is needed. Although the puzzle comes with a bunch of different sized toothpicks, many of the pieces still had to be drilled out with a drill to keep the toothpicks from breaking. (Alternatively, they can sometimes be tapped with a paper hammer.) One part had to trim the end one-sixteenth of an inch to allow the part to go through the full range specified by its hole. The axle of the front wheels is too short, so the wheels get caught on the chassis and do not rotate. (We had to sand down 1/8 inch wood on both front wheels to fix this). . (The lid is double over wood, and the plywood layer had to be sanded to get the end cap to fit properly, otherwise the lid would just fall off.) We thought this might be part of the layout work for this puzzle. has been outsourced to an uninformed supplier as accessories (particularly) have foreign holes drilled into parts not in use. The assembly instructions for the auxiliary pallet can be mixed up a bit as the part is too narrow for the forks to get stuck on the lifting pallet. Using the narrower end (instead of the long end as shown in the instructions) as the focal point will give you a usable pan. (There are about ten foreign holes in the parts of the pallet. Looks unprofessional when assembled. There are also holes drilled in the piggy bank that are actually not used. This is also unprofessional and does not meet Wood Trick's quality standards.) Finally, share Let's add another fact that everyone (except me) finds odd: when the piggy bank is palletized and the forks lift the loaded pallet into position for transport, the forklift usually has to back up before it moves. Forward. The truck abruptly shifts into reverse. The moment after turning on the gears is enough to knock the piggy bank off the pallet. We've tried loading with forks raised to different heights and the load always gets knocked over when the gears are engaged. I thought if we were to raise funds by showing the forklift in action to the assembled crowd, maybe we could put enough weight in it to hold the piggy bank load on the pallet?

Pros
  • Great for me
Cons
  • No instructions
