Firmly. An effective deterrent.

If you need to carry a lock on your bike, this might be for you. In general, I feel the lock on my racing bike is like a side stand: if you need it, you're probably riding the wrong bike. I never leave my racing bike unattended. If I have to walk somewhere, I either take the bike with me or leave it where it's never out of my line of sight and my ability to reach it quickly. So in 20 years of road and mountain biking I only locked my bikes when I took them on and off vacation in the back of my car. That all changed when I got an electric bike earlier this year. I want to ride the electric bike and then leave it in place and now a lock is needed as I use the bike for travel and not just for exercise. This is a great lock and chain. The lock itself makes a solid impression. The chain is covered in neoprene, but I'm assuming it's as strong as a chain can get. The price says it should be. But the main reason is that it's just a good, reliable system. If people want to steal your bike by sawing through the Metabo chain, they will. If they want to destroy your bike by trying to destroy it, they can, even with the best lock in the world. I like two things about this lock. First, it's strong enough to withstand accidental theft, making it a good deterrent. Second, every square inch of metal is covered with rubber or neoprene. If you mount it on your bike on a car rack and ride 1,000 miles, it won't scratch the gel coat on your carbon frame while riding. It is well protected from scratches on your bike. Finally, I would like to add that the 110cm version seems to be the shortest length you can use to protect your bike. Any shorter and you'll have a hard time finding stationary objects to fortify the castle on the roads outside of town.

Pros
  • High marks for grip and durability from testers
Cons
  • I can't remember, but there was something
