Read instructions. it needs to be calibrated. We used an oral thermometer to record my temperature. Then I switched to digital. We calibrated it to give the same reading when held 2 inches from the forehead. We have checked the correctness several times. CALIBRATE - CHECK. It was fantastic when used properly. You can get accurate readings right away, but you need to know how far from your forehead to hold the thermometer. Since I take my spouse's temperature several times a day for health reasons, this product has been invaluable.
