My parrots love to play with coconuts. As you can see in the video, it's big enough to fit one of them at a time. Not sure why it comes with base material as it is not big enough to act as a base. If you are looking for a nest for your birds, search Amazon for a birdhouse. The size of the nest you get depends on the size of your birds. Can't comment on how easy it is to clean as luckily my birds haven't pooped in it yet. If I had to improve this toy, I would make the stairs cylindrical instead of rectangular and add a carabiner for easy hanging.
