A sad story with a slightly happy ending.

The Blu-ray Disc in my PS3 Slim failed, which somehow damaged my hard drive at the same time. I made many attempts to repair the hard drive but none of them were successful so I had to reformat and lost all my saves (including hundreds of hours of Skyrim!). (For reference, Monty Python and the Holy Grail Blu-Ray disc destroyed my Blu-Ray drive and hard drive. Coincidence or not, I don't know.) Once the hard drive started working again, I discovered that the Blu-Ray drive has stopped working. reads CDs and DVDs, but not Blu-Ray movies. when one was inserted after a while it just made the famous clicking sound like it was trying to eject and nothing happened had to eject the disc with the eject button. Watched various videos on YouTube, disassembled PS3, disassembled Blu-Ray drive, cleaned laser heads, reassembled, but without success. Having taken my PS3 and Blu-ray drive apart a few times installing this drive was pretty easy, the only thing it required which I hadn't done before was removing the circuit board from the original drive and that Transferred to the new drive which wasn't a problem. I could probably buy a cheaper lens and deck option, or an even cheaper laser option, but I think because this drive was so easy to install, it was worth it. Blu-ray drive works great now! I like the fact that Nextek sells new parts, most other sellers seem to be selling refurbished parts which I don't want to mess around with, a part like a laser that has a finite lifespan. definitely. One advice I will give is to remove the Blu-ray drive. the ribbon cable is routed at an angle from the top left corner of the drive (when viewed from the front). If you watch the disassembly video, you'll probably see that a lot of people broke it the first time they tried to eject a drive. If you are careful you can remove the top of the drive with the cable taped to it and gently flip the top up to the left. However, after a few tweaks, I found that it was MUCH easier to disconnect the cable from the two connection points. One is behind the drive and plugs into the white slot. The video I was watching gave me the idea that I had to unplug this connector that I couldn't figure out how to do. I've found that all you have to do is pry the ribbon cable straight out of the connector (possibly by pressing the tab on the back of the connector, but I don't have to unless I broke the tab trying to disconnect the connector ). . When reinstalling, this end of the cable was simply plugged back into the connector. Once that side of the cable is detached (along with a screw holding the drive in place), the entire drive can be ejected. Then you should remove the cable from the other side of the connector. This connector has a small latch at the top that you just need to pull down and then pull the cable straight up. When reconnecting, reinsert the cable and pull the latch up to lock it. It's worth noting that the first time I took it apart and put it back together, if I tried to run games or apps on my hard drive, they would launch and freeze. If you disassemble and reassemble it and make sure all the cables are connected, the problem will be solved. Once you figure out how to take it all apart and put it back together the first time, it will be very easy for you to do it again (btw, another reviewer complains about the lack of a motherboard on this drive, including the logic board would be pointless, because when you replace the logic board, PS3 will not recognize your disc, so you just have to transfer the old one to the new one).

Pros
  • Great design
Cons
  • Expensive insurance
