Review on AVELER Water Resistance Internal Backpack by Sheppard Priest

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Some good, some bad qualities. Not scary, but not elite either. Good for young scouts.

So I want a 65 liter pack. I still can. The jury hasn't been delivered yet. First Impression: Built at least slightly (if not more) cheaper than big-name high-end brands. I have compared this to what Gregory owns to me (acquired 2020) and others sold by LLBean under their brand (acquired 2014). This backpack works well for the occasional overnight hiker, as a weekend holdall, or for young scouts who don't want to end up in a car crash once a month or spend a week at summer camp. I am a scout leader and I speak from experience. This works well for junior and middle age scouts. If you're a serious hiker, an adventurous person, an ultra-light person, not good with gear, or expect to carry it your entire life, you should probably look elsewhere. For Parent Scouts: Day package = 20-35 liters, 1-4 nights = 40-65 liters, week+ or long haul = 70-100 liters. Don't take anything too big. Children are overloaded, large backpacks become too heavy. 50-65 liters is pretty versatile for an overnight stay, but too big for day hikes. Pros: Rich feature set, especially looks. Multiple attachment points and bungee for extra gear, hiking poles, ice axes, water bottles, etc. Compression straps, external map pocket and brain, detachable rain cover. Modeled after some of the finest brands. Decent suspension system, fully adjustable like torso length so it can grow with your Scout. Inside two (combinable) compartments and a pocket for a hydrator (not included). Primary exterior materials appear to be relatively strong and sturdy. Good lumbar padding, although the inner frame is a little flimsy. The hip belt has small gear pockets and features a newer and simpler reverse buckle design. Cons: The zipper pullers say "YKK" but I don't think that's the case. Most likely Chinese fakes. They look cheap and chromed, which doesn't suit me at all. I hate it when zippers break in backpacks. Straps are thin. Not terrible, but thinner material than I'd like to see. The inner liner and some of the outer panels appear to be fairly cheap, flimsy, and brittle nylon. Does not inspire confidence as corners appear to be clipped in areas not normally visible from the outside. I think the lining will tear quickly, especially in cold weather when it becomes brittle. The seams look good at first glance, but are perhaps a little wider apart than on more durable gear. I can see the seams unraveling when darned too much and handled roughly. The two very bright reflective spots on the case can be highly rated or hated depending on the user. Overall three very solid stars for performance, losing the top two stars for build quality and durability. Boy Scout Moms/Dads, your junior scout will love and grow up in this pack just like the weekend warriors. True tourists will be disappointed. The youngest scouts will have difficulty using the waist belt as they don't have hips yet, but of course that will change.
