Review on πŸ”§ Gates TCKWP257 Timing Belt Kit with Water Pump for Engine by Jeffrey Johnston

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great price but installation is harder than expected.

Installed on a 1995 Camry XLE with a 1MZ-FE V-6 engine. This kit was complete and the parts were of good quality. The bearings are from an OEM supplier. The gasket with this kit was metal with a molded rubber gasket as shown; no fibrous pad as other reviewers have stated. If you want to do this installation yourself, you'll have to choose a method and purchase special tools (or new parts). The rear timing belt cover covers the water pump. To remove the pump you must either remove the back cover, which requires pulling out the camshaft gears, or loosen the back cover, pull the pins holding the water pump and slide the water pump out of the cover. First I tried removing the studs using the TORX tabs on the studs. The bolts have snapped over the years and the TORX tips have sheared off. I had a busy schedule so I just ordered the tools to get the job done anyway. Assenmacher Specialty Tools 201 Metric Stud Disassembly/Assembly Set - 4 pc. An 8mm bolt puller pulled the bolts out with no damage. The problem with this method is that it is very difficult to ensure that the sealing surface on the block is clean before installing a new water pump. I also ordered a Schley Products, Inc SCH96800 Nissan/Toyota/OHC Cam Sprocket Holding Tool which arrived a day later. This made it easier to hold the sprocket when loosening the locknuts. The sealing surfaces on our car's block were quite dirty so I would recommend the second method so that the surface can be properly cleaned. Gray Scotch-Brite is excellent for this purpose. One minor complaint is that the print quality of the instructions provided in the kit I received was terrible. It was too weak to take apart. I had the instruction manual so it's not a problem.

Pros
  • Everything is fine!
Cons
  • Expensive
