Review on Marina Hang On Breeding Box Large by Epitome Ballard

Design flaws are headaches, but they can work.

I really want to love it, but this tank has many design flaws.1. drain. The grate that is supposed to hold the fry is so far away that my 2 week old guppies were swept into the main tank and eaten by the gourami. I ended up cutting off a small piece of Seachem's The Bag and laying it over the trellis to protect the kids. 2. Removable partitions have the same problem as the drain. The rooms are so large that large bipeds swim through them.3. Pump. The air pump you have to install with it just doesn't have the power to get the job done, not to mention the noise level of the pump which can be a headache for some. I found a low powered water pump connected to the end of the air intake instead of the air pump. It's a lot quieter. The only problem is that my pump is too powerful (80 gph) so I had to stuff it with filter fleece. This works if I remember to clean the fiber every few days otherwise the flow will clog. You also need to be very careful that this box is perfectly level or slightly tilted back towards the tank. If you don't do this, the water won't come out of the drain hole properly and the grow box will overflow. Aside from that big headache, the grow box proved helpful. My bigger boys enjoy the extra swimming space and this has freed up a newborn floating breeder. (Note: the water flow is rather weak and doesn't keep the water clear. You'll need to vacuum the brood box once or twice a week to keep it healthy. I'd also recommend adding a large clump of java moss to keep the water conditions optimal .)

Pros
  • Safe and reliable aquarium for breeding, isolating or acclimating fish
Cons
  • So far so good
