Absolutely normal! Best in Computers and Accessories

I bought this to try and extend my Wi-Fi coverage to a boat dock about 150 feet from our main home extend. The router is on the opposite side of the house and I couldn't get a signal through two walls and another 20 feet or so. Out of the box, I found the installation to be fairly easy, although for someone completely new to router/network setup, I can see where the installation instructions can get a bit complicated. I also took note of the comments of others and immediately downloaded and installed the firmware update. It was very easy. Then, once the device was set up, I started trying a few places - basically plugging it in, turning it on, and checking "available networks" for the expander. Knowing pretty well that I would have to plug in an extension cord outside the house, I had a limited choice of external outlets, so I found the signal strength LED to be unusable (all spots were "good"). The next step was to go to the dock and see what kind of signal I could get from my iPhone. Of the three outer points I tried, I found one that gave me 2-3 streaks. It was enough for audio streaming and a few non-intensive tasks, but sometimes the signal would degrade and I would lose the connection entirely. A few devices using the signal would (obviously) also consume bandwidth, but for the most part the functionality was fine. I'm giving it four stars because it does what it says on the tin, easy to use once set up, relatively inexpensive but a little too weak to get a good Wi-Fi signal 150 feet across a wide open in my opinion spread area.

Pros
  • Finding the best install location for optimal Wi-Fi coverage with LED signal strength indicator
Cons
  • Quick guide
