Review on WAHL ๐Ÿ”ฅ ISO-TIP 7700 Solder Iron by Dave Russell

Revainrating 4 out of 5

NOW: Still great after all these years

I bought the first one 30-40 years ago and have loved it ever since. The only problem I find with this new one is that it still uses 30-40 year old battery technology. I think it's time to upgrade to Li-ion batteries. Even with the old battery technology, I can highly recommend it. Update 7/27/13: I've had this iron for almost a year now and I have to revise my rating down because at some point they switched to Ni-Cad batteries from China and I found that most nickel-cadmium batteries come from China is bad at best and they are no exception. I have had to change batteries and/or throw away many items (e.g. rechargeable vacuums, drills, flashlights, scissors, radios, etc.) of various brands due to Ni-Cad from China. Now it looks like I'll have to think about finding a new battery circuit for this iron because it doesn't work the way it did with those batteries. Chinese nickel cadmium batteries and I withdraw my recommendations for this iron. Update 10/23/13: I now have a great soldering iron again. Right after I wrote an update to my review above, I replaced the battery. I bought 2 $13.01 sub-c 4200mah NIMH tabbed batteries from Revain, installed them and they are working like a champ (nearly 3 months now). Everything about the iron is the same except for the batteries, but now I have triple the battery capacity, no memory effect, much longer battery life, and saved over $10 on a regular replacement battery. I installed the new batteries by soldering 2 tabs together in the middle of the batteries and then drilling a hole in both end tabs and the batteries went into the iron and fitted nicely. I'm happy again with my soldering iron, but I feel like I didn't have to do that (like changing the batteries), the Iso-Tip should have gotten that right from the start. I am changing my rating again because I like my iso tip again.
