When I bought the EOS R I knew I needed an EF adapter to take full advantage of my Canon lenses. I got the standard adapter first (the control ring adapter was missing) and it worked perfectly. Autofocus and all lens functions work just as well on the EOS R as they do on my DSLRs. In fact, the autofocus is more accurate, so my lenses work even better with this adapter than with a DSLR. No slowdown or anything, and being essentially a pad with electrical contacts, there's no glass to spoil image quality. Use RF lenses, it has a built-in control ring, and in this way you can get a stable experience whether you use adapted EF lenses or RF lenses. The only difference is that the RF lenses have the control ring closer to the front element while the adapter has the control ring closer to the body. Because the control ring is closer to the body of the adapter, it can be easily rotated without realizing it, so watch your settings. I use it for aperture control and the first few times I used it I had issues with the aperture setting randomly changing, but I've adjusted my behavior and it's no longer an issue.
