Do you have handrails? Read it. This product is fine. In order for this to make sense in your situation, certain parameters must be observed. It is not apparent or obvious from the description or inappropriate images used by the seller. Basically, you need about 3 inches of flat and clean wall space that extends from the floor to a height of 3 feet at the top of your steps. Three important considerations: 1. If you have a skirting board, especially one that can follow your steps and meets at an angle at the top of the steps, you may have difficulty installing it. 2. If your railing intrudes into the 3 inch area, you will find it difficult to install. 3. If you do not have a bolt at the installation site, you will find that the strength of the product is questionable. 4. When transitioning from wood to carpet between the stair and the floor/platform, a leg support (only visible in a photo but required for installation) prevents/causes the gate from swinging. I have experienced all four of these installation issues and will not purchase or install this product again. What seemed like a simple and straight forward installation quickly turned into a complex project, shortening the railing, lengthening the baseboard, strengthening the installation site and making adjustments due to the transition from wood to carpet between the steps and the top landing. On the right install page I can easily see the best rating for this product. However, as announced, this is not an easy solution for every household.
