A few years ago I bought a nice house that was a little fixable, not because it was in disrepair but because the previous owners had committed to expand it "Improvements". A cut insect seals the jar until it is unusable. I never thought much about it, although there are spiders in the house, until I saw a moth flutter through the closed screen door. So I bought it for the second floor. Good gracious! I didn't even know it would be that easy! If you're unsure whether to a) buy this, b) call a handyman, or c) order a new screen, check the old strip to see if it sits in a ledge on the screen and you can replace it screwdriver can get stuck between the screen and the rod. If possible, skip the handyman. Nothing easier than that. But that doesn't mean it's reliable. Here's my story that might explain some of the low ratings. I pulled the old one up and put the new one in without cutting it. I simply pulled the old one out of the door, pushed the new one into the slot, smoothed it out with my fingers until it was flat, then carefully shortened the excess length at the bottom. It worked like a dream! The black stripe stuck out more than I would like, so I decided to order a new one for the bottom tier and cut that one notch. There was an error. I cut it to a notch which was very easy. I just cut an inch along the line and then ripped them apart. super easy. Then installed in the door. Oh God. Cutting it off was a mistake. You want too much and here's why. 1) These screens are never straight. While there's a lot of it at the top and bottom, in the middle the edge I tore off fits snugly against the glass. 2) If it's too tight on the glass and frame it will stick and bunch up when you open the door causing the door to bind and the bug seal to come right out of the track unless you cut it off the glass until the bugs win don't get in like the previous owners. Believe me. You want that inch of flat black to hang over the glass and frame. You won't have a problem if you leave it uncut. I've swapped them out and they both work great. Lesson learned for the price of a cup of coffee. Not bad considering how much quality of life I'm already experiencing.
